What is the Personality Disorders Institute (PDI)
The Personality Disorders Institute (PDI) is directed by Otto F. Kernberg, MD and co-directed by John F. Clarkin, PhD. The PDI began in 1995 as the
culmination of over 20 years of preliminary work by Dr. Kernberg and his colleagues in various institutions into the diagnosis and treatment of Personality disorders. The PDI has three missions, treatment, training, and
research. What the PDI does Since its inception in 1995, the PDI has conducted research studies investigating various aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of
personality disorders (PDs). The NIMH funded a treatment development grant (Dr. Clarkin was the Primary Investigator) that looked at 10 women who were diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and
treated with Transference Focused Psychotherapy (TFP). The results of this study are being prepared for publication. The PDI is currently involved in a Randomized Clinical Trial (RCT) comparing three
specialized treatments for BPD (click here for study details). Patients with BPD will be randomly assigned to one of the three treatments, either Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT… hotlink
to their training website), TFP, or a modified psychodynamic supportive psychotherapy (Supportive). Members There are many members of the PDI; clinicians,
researchers, and visiting fellows. Some members have worked with Dr. Kernberg since his early days at the Menninger Clinic, others joined when Dr. Kernberg came as Medical Director for the New York Hospital-
Cornell Medical Center, Westchester Division (now the New York Presbyterian Hospital and the Weill Medical College). There is a listing of members at the PDI web site, the first link listed under "Favorite

Current Projects
- Randomized Clinical Trial
The PDI has completed recruitment of patients with Borderline Persoanlity Disorder
for participation in a randomized clinical trial evaluating three treatments for the condition. Subjects were between the ages of 19 and 50 and without a psychotic disorder. Patients with an active eating
or substance dependence disorder within six months of entry into the study were excluded. All subjects were evaluated for the BPD diagnosis. Patients received free psychotherapy for one year in exchange for
participation in the research assessments. A psychopharmacologist was provided, but medications were the responsibility of the patient. Data is now being analyzed. Preliminary results are being disseminated at
various scientific meetings and will be written up for publication as completed.
