About ...

Pamela A. Foelsch, PhD is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University.  She is the Director of Training Program Development at the Personality Disorders Institute directed by Otto F. Kernberg, MD and co-directed by John F. Clarkin, PhD.  Dr. Foelsch works with Drs. Otto Kernberg and Frank Yeomans to develop programs to educate clinicians in the latest developments in the treatment of personality disordered patients.  She is also a senior supervisor, trained in TFP. Dr. Foelsch was awarded "Teacher of the Year" (2005-2006) by the NYPH - Weill Medical College for her supervision of post-doctoral fellows and providing a training seminar on Adolescent Psychotherapy (with the late, Dr. Paulina Kernberg) in the OPD at the Payne Whitney Westchester Division. Her research projects include the development of a modification of TFP for Adolescents, development of self report questionnaires that assess personality pathology, the development of a psychotherapy process measure, and the relationship of these constructs (pathology and process) to treatment outcome.

Dr. Foelsch received her PhD in Clinical Psychology in 1994 from Fairleigh Dickinson University, mentored by Michael Sperling, PhD.  She completed a 2 year Internship at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, Westchester Division where she received the Alumni Award for Clinical Excellence.  She completed a 2 year post-doctoral fellowship at the Personality Disorders Institute (PDI) while working as Project Coordinator for Dr. Clarkin's NIMH funded Treatment Development grant.  This study was the basis of the treatment manual "Psychotherapy for Borderline Personality" published by Wiley in 1999.

After her post-doctoral fellowship, she became an Instructor of Psychology In Psychiatry at Cornell Medical College in 1997 while continuing to work at the PDI.  She was promoted to Assitant Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry in 2000.  During her time at the PDI she worked with others to facilitate obtaining funding to continue the psychotherapy research while developing independant lines of research studying psychotherapy process and outcome.

In her research capacity, she was responsible for assessing potential patients for inclusion in the psychotherapy research.  In this role, she has developed an expertise in the differential diagnosis of AXIS I and AXIS II pathology.  Under the direct supervision of Dr. Kernberg, she began treating personality disordered patients using the TFP psychotherapy model in 1997. Currently, she is a trained TFP therapist and Supervisor and is developing a training program with Dr. Yeomans and Dr. Kernberg which will allow others to develop skill and competence in treating personality disordered patients with TFP.

Dr. Foelsch is also in private practice in White Plains where she specializes in differential diagnosis, consultation, TFP supervision and individual psychotherapy for adults and late adolescents.

Research Information

Dr. Foelsch's independent line of research is focused on the psychotherapy process between the patient and therapist and its relationship to patient outcome.  She collaborates with Dr. Lina Normandin, a colleague at the University of Laval in Quebec.  They have developed the TCA (Transference Countertransference Analysis) method to measure psychotherapy process. Results obtained from this instrument have been presented at national and international meetings.

Most recently Dr. Foelsch was the Head of the Informatics and Statistical Core in the Personality Disorders Institute (PDI) managing the recruitment of subjects, creation and management of the database, and training of assessors for the Swiss Foundation funded randomized clinical trial (click here for RCT information) being conducted to compare three treatments for patients diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). She resigned that position to become Director of Training Development at the PDI (See above for those responsibilities).
