    T ransference Focused Psychotherapy for Personality Disorders

TFP is an effective psychodynamically-oriented psychotherapy, capable of producing dramatic clinical change in patients with personality disorders, including Borderline and Narcissistic.  TFP decreases self-destructive behavior, improves affect regulation, and targets interpersonal difficulties that interfere with an individual's ability to function at work and in relationships.  Improvement is a result of fundamental change in personality structure.
This conference is designed for clinicians in a variety of treatment settings - private practice, clinic, and hospital - interested in learning techniques to manage and treat the difficult patient.  Participants should have clinical experience treating patients with personality disorders and an understanding of basic psychodynamic principles.  Recommended reading prior to the conference is Psychotherapy of Borderline Personality by Clarkin, Yeomans, and Kernberg (Wiley, 1999).

Conference Objectives

At the end of the conference participants will be able to:

  • Describe and apply an object-relations model to personality pathology
  • Introduce a model-based diagnostic procedure to evaluate a patient
  • Understand and apply a "Treatment Contract" as a basis for treatment
  • Understand the fundamental Strategies, Tactics and Techniques of the TFP treatment
  • Be aware of potential patient and treatment complications
  • Learn the latest in adjunctive psychopharmacological treatment

Faculty of the Weill Cornell Medical College

Otto F. Kernberg, MD, FAPA is director of the Personality Disorders Institute and Professor of Psychiatry.  He is a training and supervising analyst at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research.

Pamela A. Foelsch, PhD is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry.  She is Director of Training in the Personality Disorders Institute and in private practice in White Plains.

Frank E. Yeomans, MD, PhD is a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry.  He is a Senior Consultant in the Personality Disorders Institute and in private practice in White Plains and New York City.
